The History of the Tournament
Swing Back At Cancer tournament Founder, Cole Scattarelli, was born and raised in Elk River, MN. Growing up Cole played hockey, baseball, football, and golf. After high school Cole even moved to Vermont to play hockey and later returned to Minnesota to play for Hamline University.
In March of 2012, while Cole was attending Graduate School at the College of St. Scholastica, Cole went in for a routine doctors visit. They detected a lump in his throat. Further testing confirmed the worst - Cole had thyroid cancer.
With the support and encouragement of his family, friends, and professors, Cole immediately underwent surgery at the University of Minnesota to remove the cancer. Cole returned to school five days later and was able to finish the semester on time. After an additional surgery, iodine radiation, and several scans, Cole was declared cancer-free. Although he felt incredibly relieved, he knew he wanted to do something to help others who were in similar situations.
Cole decided to combine his love of golf with his passion to help others. With the help of his family and friends, he founded the Swing Back at Cancer Golf Tournament. What started as a small idea to raise a little money, has grown into an annual charity golf tournament and silent auction that is sponsored by some of the region's most prominent businesses. In just five years, Swing Back At Cancer has raised over $300,000.
Hosting over 200 attendees each year (145 of which are golfers), Swing Back At Cancer is giving 100% of its proceeds to Jack’s Caregiver Coalition (www.jackscaregiverco.org). Jack’s Caregiver Coalition is a local nonprofit organization that helps guy caregivers and their families who are caring for a spouse with cancer. Jack’s provides year-round programs, services, and education to help improve the way guys think, feel, and act through every phase of their caregiving journey. Jack’s is the “not so secret club” for caregivers and their families; a community where they never feel alone. When caregivers feel supported and better equipped for their caregiving role, they are better at caring for their loved one with cancer.
Cole continues to be cancer-free and is living life the only way he knows how - to the fullest!
